Museum Like
October 27th - November 10th, 2010 | Küçük Bebek, İstanbul
Project WebsiteThe exhibition titled ‘MUSEUM LIKE’ (October 27 –November 10, 2010) was born from the idea that three good friends came up with to create the best exhibition concept to represent the artist among them.
This first solo exhibition by Seçil Kınay is the culmination of her works in the last ten years as she experimented with different techniques, and in fact the story of her development manifested in the reflection of an institution in which she believes. The exhibition features more than 40 oil paintings and two installations.
The story behind why the exhibition was titled “MUSEUM LIKE” goes back to the early summer of 2009 when Seçil Kınay and Bige Duyulmuş met during their Masters studies in the Anatolian Civilizations and Cultural Heritage Management Program at the Koç University Social Sciences Institute. When Seçil showed Bige her oil paintings and drawings in different techniques that she had been perfecting for the last decade, an idea was born to exhibit these works in an experiential setting that would reflect the museum institution that they been working on and thinking about. They believed that the most effective way to present Seçil’s works to the viewers – both in terms of displaying the works and also as an ordinary setting - would be to conceive the exhibition space as a modern museum in the rooms of a house. Bige and Seçil then defined and developed the conceptual framework, exhibition contents and design, and website. Putting together “Museum Like” and finding the ideal space to convert it to an exhibition space was harder than they imagined. Then, Begüm joined the team, and the trio began to work more professionally on giving life to the exhibition project.
While most of the works featured in the “MUSEUM LIKE” exhibition are oil paintings or mixed media, there is also a series of paintings on MDF. Seçil makes use of different materials and methods (like inscriptions) in her paintings as well. Also featured are two installations, which complement the exhibition as works created with the inquisitive attitude that stems from Seçil’s sociology background, and represent her view of the family and community that she is a part of, and where she stands.
